Concrete Masonry Checkoff Enlists Irene Li to Spearhead West Coast Design Support

Li will serve as technical director for the West Region, where climate change, seismic activity and wildfires pose unique challenges for AECs

The Concrete Masonry Checkoff (CMC) announced the addition of structural engineer Irene Li to its visionary Block Design Collective (BDC), a virtual destination where complimentary CMU design services are available for architects, engineers and contractors (AECs).

“Irene’s deep background in new design, forensics and existing structural rehabilitation is a key addition to our efforts in a region impacted by an increasing number of natural disasters in recent years,” said Kim Spahn, CEO, Concrete Masonry Checkoff.

Li will serve as technical director for the West Region (Region 5), where climate change, seismic activity and wildfires pose unique challenges for AECs. Li credited the “forward thinking” of the CMC in moving forward with the role.

“It’s an opportunity to influence and drive changes all across the AEC industry, and be a strategic partner with architects, engineers and contractors in how we envision a future infrastructure within the U.S.,” said Li.

A Chicago area native, Li earned her Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Cornell University before pursuing her MS in Structural Engineering and Geomechanics at Stanford University. She credits the Windy City for her career choice. “Chicago had a huge influence on my decision to pursue structural engineering. It is a town that has long been at the forefront of American architecture and a city that has showcased resiliency after building itself up after the Chicago Fire”. Li joins a team of Regional Technical Directors backed by a trusted network of practicing designers and architects with extensive masonry experience. Together, they bring a shared commitment to problem-solving, partnership and timely project support.
