SUMMARY:CE 4040/6040 (001) Masonry Structural Design Course
DESCRIPTION:New Masonry Engineering Course – Sold out with 55 Students! \nCourse Description: Introduction to design of structural elements for masonry buildings\, including lintels\, walls\, shear walls\, columns\, pilasters\, and retaining walls. Reinforced and unreinforced elements of concrete or clay masonry are designed by allowable stress and strength design methods. Introduces construction techniques\, materials\, and terminology used in masonry. \nLearning Objectives / Outcomes After completing this course\, students will be able to \n\nIdentify masonry types and components of masonry assemblies.\nGain a basic understanding of the materials used to fabricate masonry assemblies\, and the materials test procedures for obtaining material properties for design.\nDesign reinforced and unreinforced elements of concrete or clay masonry by allowable stress and strength design methods.\nDemonstrate knowledge gained in the course through a hands-on laboratory or design project.\nGain understanding of practical considerations for constructability and durability of masonry.\n\nLocation: Clemson University

SUMMARY:Spitzer School of Architecture – Design + Build Competition and Curriculum
DESCRIPTION:The main objective is to facilitate recognition that common building materials (Concrete Masonry) can be reinterpreted and improved by good design: \n\nPerspective: Making something extraordinary out of the ordinary\, with objective parameters of analysis for improvement.\nScope of work: Design and development of 5-15 prototypes of concrete block green-wall systems: documentation at CD-level\, with course plans\, sections elevations\, axonometric representations of systems\, key details\, perspectival representations; sketch models; full scale prototype (finished at event).\n\nThis is a design build hands on education competition for one full semester. Two design team consisting of 4th & 5th year architectural students will compete. A winning team will be announced\, and awards will be handed out at a luncheon Banquet. \nLocation: Spitzer School of Architecture (CCNY) 141 Convent Ave.\, New York NY 10031
